The Space Between

Hey, all! How’s it going?

Things are a bit weird for me because this is a breathing room break. I finished a third round of editing and my book is now in what I’m told is called “production.” Coming from a producer/editor’s standpoint, my book has been in production since November 1 a few Nanowrimos ago, but I guess the equivalent here would be postproduction. Pre-production and shooting have all occurred, we’ve gone through several production cuts, and now we’re in the polishing stages. It feels weird knowing the book is (mostly) out of my hands now. My little baby, off to save China.

Given that pretty much every big decision has been met with heartburn since I got the offer email in January, I have come to terms with the fact that I will never be one of those chill authors who greets every big event with a placid blink and a “Cool.” My first round of edits caused my sister to start approaching me the way one does a wild animal, my second was met with an indifferent shrug, and my third seemed to inspire twin cases of fondness and good-god-this-manuscript-is-coming-at-me-with a-sword-and-I-welcome-my-fate levels of acceptance. I have no idea how I feel about the fourth round.

It’s been a process.

September will be fun. I handed in the 30-day notice at my apartment in an attempt to get myself off of my rear and find new accommodations that won’t involve FREEZING ALL WINTER. So in addition to cracking down on the sequel to SUPERHEROES ANONYMOUS, I’ll be searching for a new place to live, packing up my apartment, painting over my purple wall (where you can still see an old spoiler painted on it!), and decamping to the new chez Dunne. I plan on making a trip up to Springfield to eat at Simply Delicious to stay with one of my good friends because it’s been a busy year for both of us. The Dragonlet is turning three, so I’ll have to get him a really cool birthday present. He’s got some amazing aunts, so it’ll take quite a good one to secure the Coolest Aunt title. *plots*

This is all in addition to prepping for the trip to New York at the beginning of October. I’ve done my usual travel prep, which involve asking local friends for suggestions, and setting up an Annotary collection. Thanks to the marvelous Sabra’s tips, I was able to net a couple of tickets to the Daily Show for the 9th. I consider them my thirtieth birthday present to myself and I hope I get in, even if it might mean racing straight over from the airport. I really hope it’s one of the shows with Jessica Williams.

I’m hoping to make it to Midtown Comics (I bought my very first comic book there in 2007), The Strand, MoMA, and a bunch of restaurants my friend keeps telling me about. She sneers at my love for Chicago deep dish pizza, fears the soggy crackers and cheese that Imo’s dares to call pizza, and tells me my mind will finally be truly open to life if I have a good slice of New York pizza.

Cool Things I’ve Picked Up Around the Internet This Week:
  1. Hullabaloo, a 2-D animated steampunk short about a scientist named Veronica Daring, reached its funding goal within days of being posted. I am absolutely in LOVE with everything that’s been released, and am excited to see if it can meet any of its stretch goals.
  2. I have developed an obsession with Walk Off the Earth, thanks to my friend Lucky. They throw stuff and are marvelous.
  3. Yeah, so this is an otter getting rubbed on the nose and I CANNOT HANDLE IT.
  4. Dramatic presidential portraits or something. I'm really not sure.
Anyway, that's all I've got for this week. See you on Sunday when normal posting resumes (I took last Sunday off because holiday).

Stay sexy!

  1. Good luck with the move. I'm moving on my own birthday in October and I'll have to treat myself when the dust settles.
I'll have to add Midtown comics to my list of things to do next year. It's well known over here as well amongst comic fans.
Have a good time and stay well.

    1. Thank you! I'm probably going to need it. :) You're moving on your birthday??? I thought flying on my birthday was scary enough. I bow to you.

I made an error. I think I went to Forbidden Planet rather than Midtown comics while I was in NY last time. I'll do some more research and let you know!

      Thanks!
